A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything: My Journey with Toto’s Jean-Michel Byron

Sometimes, life writes the best music. Years ago, Jean-Michel Byron—South African-born vocalist and former lead singer of Toto—was passing through Botswana on his way to South Africa. By pure chance, he walked into a venue where I was performing in Gaborone, Botswana.

What happened next changed my life. After the show, Jean-Michel came up to me and said:

“Your voice has something the world needs to hear. You should record an album.”

His words were more than encouragement—they were a turning point.

That conversation led to something extraordinary: Jean-Michel returned to Botswana months later to produce Mmasonoko my very first album.

Working with him was a masterclass in artistry and professionalism. He believed in my voice, my story, and the power of African jazz to reach the world.

Today, as my latest album Sephonono connects with listeners across the World, I look back on that moment with gratitude. It reminds me that music is a bridge—and sometimes, the right person crossing that bridge can change your entire journey.
